From Slavery to Sonship
Exodus 15:22 – 17:7
Introduction:
- Exodus is about deliverance and freedom – both from and into
o Deliverance from bondage
o Freedom to move into promised land
- A foreshadow of salvation
- Exodus portrays Christ as our Passover Lamb
- Today will focus on slave vs. son
1. Slaves, sons, & inheritance
a. Galatians 4: 6-7 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.
2. A son’s worldview
a. English: mind Greek: phronema <– phroneo <- phren (midriff)
b. Used 3 times in Romans: 8:6,7 carnally minded, spiritually minded
c. Romans 8:27 the mind of the Spirit
d. Focuses on the solution instead of the problem
e. Asks questions of faith instead of doubt
3. A son’s relationship to time
a. Lives in the moment, embraces the future
b. Learns by God’s voice command
c. Reserves a Sabbath rest
4. A son’s testimony
a. For a lifetime and beyond
b. Recognizes and passes God’s testing
c. Obeys out of love
d. Speaks what God says, even in the face of opposition
e. Heart has a home (John 14:16-18)
5. A son’s inheritance
a. Wage vs. inheritance
b. Prodigal son
c. Steward the inheritance
d. Transition by the renewing of the mind
